MEDICAL DEVICE INDUSTRY IN SAUDI ARABIA SET TO EXPAND BY 12%
09/08/10- The medical device industry is one of the largest segments of the healthcare industry in Saudi Arabia and has been showing noteworthy growth in current years, according to the latest RNCOS research report ‘Saudi Arabian Healthcare Market Forecast to 2012’ resealed this month. It said the medical device market was worth around US$ 790 Million in 2009. The main drivers of the growth in this industry will be the increasing investments by the public and the private sectors for setting up hospitals and clinics, which will create a strong demand for medical equipment and supplies.
According to the report, the future of this industry remains pleasantly buoyant and it is expected that this industry will grow at a CAGR of around 12 per cent during 2010-2012. The optimistic outlook for the growth of this industry bases with the fact that the health insurance in the country is increasing at a high rate which will boost the spending on medical devices. The research indicates that the Saudi healthcare industry has immense growth potential as it is in the initial stages of development. There is a high demand for hospital services and healthcare professionals in the industry.
“We have done extensive research and prudent analysis of the Saudi Arabian medical device market in order to understand the factors that will continue to serve as growth driver for this market over the forecast period (2010-2012),” the report said. “We have identified that various factors such as increasing rate of chronic diseases and rising old age population will create a substantial demand for diagnostic and monitoring devices, particularly diabetes and cardiovascular medical devices,” it added

TAWAM UNVEILS NEW ICU TECHNOLOGY
20/07/10- Tawam Hospital, a tertiary care facility in Al Ain, in affiliation with US-based Johns Hopkins Medicine, has introduced a pioneering therapy to its neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
The technology, known as Neurally Adjusted Ventilatory Assist (Nava), is a new mode of assisted mechanical ventilation that enables the brain of the patient, in this case a premature baby, to control the mechanical ventilator.
Nava technology uses electrical diaphragmatic activity (EDA) to adjust ventilator support according to a patient’s personal needs.
The mechanical ventilator senses the electrical signal transmitted from the brain to the diaphragm; the muscle below the lungs vital for breathing. The synchrony between the patient and ventilator helps minimize patient discomfort and thereby reduces the need for sedatives.
“With the cooperation of the nurses and physician trainers, the respiratory therapists have successfully managed to put this groundbreaking therapy into operation,” said Edita Almonte, department head of respiratory therapy.
“We are proud to be the first UAE hospital with this new Nava technology, especially as it is helping some of our smallest and most vulnerable patients to breathe more easily,” he added.
SIEMENS ENHANCES DIGITAL RADIOGRAPHY SYSTEMS
19/07/10- Siemens has enhanced its digital radiography systems with technology that produces a soft tissue image of the chest. Riverain Medical’s SoftView Enhanced Chest Imaging technology automatically suppresses the ribs and clavicles to improve the visibility of soft tissue structures in the lungs, allowing the physician to interpret pulmonary nodules with greater certainty. Furthermore, as SoftView uses the existing chest X-ray to produce the soft tissue image, it eliminates additional dose and motion artifacts commonly associated with dual energy solutions.
Ribs and clavicles on a chest X-ray often make it difficult for the physician to obtain a clear evaluation of the lung tissue. Until now, radiologists have used dual energy technology to improve the visibility of the lungs. The technique involves the successive acquisition of two images consisting of a low and a high energy spectrum. The physician can then use these two images to visualize the soft tissue in the lung.
Siemens is now offering SoftView from Riverain Medical with Ysio, their latest digital radiography system. SoftView enables the physician to acquire a soft tissue image faster and without any additional radiation dose for the patient. “Patient positioning, radiation dose and inspiration can make the interpretation of a chest X-ray challenging. SoftView suppresses the ribs and clavicles on a chest X-ray to improve the clarity of the image, even when image quality is low,” explains Dr. Stefan Palmers, Ghent Hospital, Belgium, who is already working with the technology. “Siemens Healthcare’s Ysio and Riverain Medical’s SoftView technologies together produce optimal image quality.”
SoftView is available from Siemens as a one-stop solution with Ysio, but can also be acquired as an upgrade for other digital radiography systems from Siemens. The software can easily be integrated and requires no adaptation of the clinical protocols for chest X-rays.

IMPERIAL COLLEGE LONDON DIABETES CENTRE ABU DHABI IMPLEMENTS NEW “DIAMOND” IT SYSTEM
20/07/10: ICLDC (Imperial College London Diabetes Centre) in Abu Dhabi, the UAE’s largest state of the art medical centre dedicated to the treatment of diabetes, has implemented specialist diabetes software, DIAMOND from healthcare IT solutions and services specialist, Hicom. The system has helped ICLDC meet its strategic objectives including achieving accreditation from the Joint Commission International (JCI) a recognized world leader in health care quality and patient safety.
ICLDC, an initiative of Mubadala Healthcare and Imperial College London, is dedicated to providing high quality, specialised care to patients with diabetes and currently treats around 350 patients every day. DIAMOND gives ICLDC complete visibility of its systems and provides the platform for the management of work flow, patient check-in, blood samples and test results.
Dr. Maha Taysir Barakat, Medical & Research Director and Consultant Endocrinologist at ICLDC, says, “The DIAMOND platform from Hicom allows us to use automated electronic reports to monitor the various parameters we have in place that are important for quality of care, patient satisfaction and patient safety. Gaining JCI accreditation is a process that involves rigorous and objective monitoring and optimisation of processes. Using DIAMOND enables us to automate much of the auditing process, which saves us significant amounts of time and means we do not have to physically follow individuals around the centre, manually collating data from each department.”
Mubadala announces expansion plan for Imperial College London Diabetes Centre
Mubadala Healthcare, a business unit of Mubadala Development Company (Mubadala), has announced plans to expand the existing services of Imperial College London Diabetes Centre (ICLDC) through the establishment of a second facility in Al Ain. This new Centre will provide world-class medical care for local residents in Al Ain and the surrounding region from the middle of next year.
The first Imperial College London Diabetes Centre facility opened in Abu Dhabi in 2006, following an agreement between Mubadala and Imperial College London to collaborate in the fields of healthcare, education and research. It was one of the first facilities to be established by Mubadala as part of its strategy to stimulate the development of a robust private healthcare infrastructure in the region.
The International Diabetes Federation has estimated that 18.7 per cent of the UAE population is living with Diabetes and according to the Centre’s figures, an average of 15 per cent of their patients reside outside Abu Dhabi in Al Ain.
“It is testament to the excellent work carried out at the Centre over the past four years that we are now able to replicate the same model of care for patients living outside the capital. I am delighted to build upon our partnership with Imperial College London with a second facility and improve access to world-class healthcare in the region,” said Suhail Mahmood Al Ansari, Associate Director of Mubadala Healthcare and Chairman of ICLDC.
“This new facility will allow us to become an integral part of the Al Ain community,” said Dr Maha Barakat, Medical and Research Director, Imperial College London Diabetes Centre. “Improved local access to our services will make it easier for patients to receive treatment, prevent the complications associated with diabetes, and ultimately live healthier lives.”

PHILIPS DEMONSTRATES THEIR PEOPLE-FOCUSED APPROACH DURING SAUDI MEDICARE 2010
Dubai, UAE – At Saudi Medicare 2010, Royal Philips Electronics presented a wide range of healthcare solutions designed to address the needs of patients and healthcare providers in the Middle East. The exhibition is the 13th International Healthcare, Hospital Supplies and Medical Equipment show that took place from the 12th through the 15th of April.
The Healthcare industry around the world is faced with many challenges. In healthcare, treatment demand in the GCC alone will rise by 240% over the next 20 years, with the incidence of cardiovascular disease increasing dramatically by 419% over the same timeframe . Other chronic diseases are also on the rise, which will require greater numbers of diagnostic and treatment facilities.
These include diabetes; where patients in the country are projected to increase by 3.5% annually and oncology; specifically women’s diseases such as breast cancer which represents almost 20% of all cancers diagnosed among women in the Kingdom.
“The Middle East is seeing disease patterns evolve towards complex chronic disorders, due to factors such as an aging population and change in lifestyle, resulting in a shift away from traditional diets. The Middle East region currently has the world’s highest prevalence of diabetes , a major risk factor for heart disease. The region is also showing the fastest growth in the occurrence of cardiovascular disease ”, says Diederik Zeven, Senior Director and General Manager of Philips Healthcare Middle East.
“At Philips, we simplify healthcare by combining our unique clinical expertise with insights into how patients and clinicians experience healthcare. In response we can develop more intuitive, and in the end better technology solutions to help take some of the complexity out of healthcare. This helps to drive better diagnosis, more appropriate treatment planning, faster patient recovery and long term health.
“In cardiology we are focusing on four important areas that will help us improve healthcare delivery for patients with cardiac diseases: timely triage (solutions for fast, non-invasive evaluation of high risk cardiac patients) discovery to treatment (solutions that reduce door to balloon times for acute cardiac patients by clearing a path from discovery to treatment), minimally invasive interventions and connected healthcare solutions in the home for chronic heart patients.”
